It is great to get engaged. The engaged couple gets well-wishes from family and friends, meaningful presents, and champagne to taste. However, nothing can ever top the sheer joy of knowing that your partner wishes to be with you for the rest of their life. Above all, there is a wedding to wait for.
For some people, the emotional highs and lows of proposing went on practically forever. For others, it has been an on-again, off-again relationship.
Here are four romantic couples who stayed to be so for a longer-than-usual time.
Stedman Graham and Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey is still one of the most popular TV personalities, and she has been dating Stedman Graham since the year 1986. The couple got engaged back in 1992, by which time Oprah Winfrey realized she did not wish to be married. Stedman Graham agreed to postpone their wedding, and even after all these years, it remains to be the case. Lady O said if she had gotten married to him, then it could not have been possible for her to create the life she now has.
David Otunga and Jennifer Hudson
American singer and actor, Jennifer Hudson and former professional wrestler David Otunga stayed engaged from 2008 to 2017. Their engagement happened days before a personal tragedy: Hudson’s brother-in-law murdered her brother, mother and nephew. A year later, the couple was gifted with a boy and they named him Daniel.
Now, think how long they waited to walk down the aisle: almost 10 years. Some filmmakers in Hollywood wait that long to create their magnum opus, but that is reel life, and this is the real life.
Antonio De La Rua and Shakira
The Latin American singer Shakira and Antonio, the son of the former President of Argentina, Fernando de la Rua, were engaged for 10 years. Antonio de la Rua was an integral figure in the peak of Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll’s international success. It is unsure why they chose to part ways rather than getting married, but anyhow, things turned sour right after that. He sued her for firing their business partner with no prior notice.
Shannon Tweed and Gene Simmons
We are not sure whether there was an official engagement or proposal, but Canadian actor Shannon Tweed and KISS rocker Gene Simmons had been together for 28 years before getting hitched in 2011. They made it official, but after he burned all polaroids of his “KISS” band groupies under her watchful eye.
